Diagram 1

Set Up

  • The players are divided into 3 teams of 4
  • The layout includes 2x 10x 8yd areas, with a 5yd gap in-between (free zone) separating the boxes
  • Balls start on the outside. 1 team is set up in one area, another team is set up in the other area and the team defending starts in the middle (free zone). See diagram 1
  • Ball is played into one area, as soon as the ball is played, 2 of the defending players can go in to try and force a mistake or win the ball. Players defending will work for a set period of time (i.e. 45secs)
  • The team in possession is required to make a set number of passes (4-5) and then play a pass across into the other area. Once they pass has been received by a player in the area, the 2 other players can go in to try to force a mistake or win the ball
  • Unlimited touches for the player in the area
  • The players waiting in the free zone can not intercept the pass to transfer the ball across

Progressions

  • Restriction on the number of touches inside the area
  • Change the amount of time that the defenders work for

Coaching Points

  • Tempo and quality of passing
  • Awareness and movement to receive the ball
  • Awareness and movement to create space for other players
  • Angle of support
  • 1st touch to open out
  • Creating openings to switch the ball
  • Pressing together as a pair – nearest player gets up to the ball

  • The team that forced the mistake then replace that team in the area
