Team Defending Drills That Make a Difference Part Two

By Danny Carvalho

Question - “My team is awful at defending.  What are some good team defending drills I can do that will help?"

I love working on defending, especially team defending. This Part Two of three of my favorite drills that will help you with that matter.

Activity 3 – Delay and recover
This is a simple and tremendously effective activity on delaying an attacking opponent. Using half of the field, have a goalkeeper, one defender on the spot, an attacker and a late defender.

Play starts with the attacker dribbling the ball on a 1v1 against the defender on the spot. Meanwhile, the second defender sprints to try and double up the marking on the attacker.

The first defender’s role is to delay the opponent as much as possible by staying in front of them with composure, denying progression and not diving in.

After the attacker being delayed by the first defender for a few seconds, the late defender finally reaches them.

That’s when the tackle must happen so the two defenders win the ball and move it away from their goal.
