Small-Sided Game For Possession

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on possession and getting to goal.

This activity uses a half field with a goal and a keeper on each end line. There is a middle grid of 20 x 44 with a 4 v 4 in this grid. There is a neutral player out wide on each side and an attacking player 15 yards from each goal.

The players in the grid play possession and need 5 passes before the can attack (if you want you can alter that number. Once they get their 5 passes they can either play the ball to their target player up front who must lay the ball off one touch. As soon as the ball is played to the target player all players are live.

The other option, after the 5 passes are made, is the ball can be played out wide to the neutral player who is also limited to one touch. Once the ball is played out wide, everyone is live

Anytime there is a loss of possession the ball goes back to the middle and play resumes.

The objective here is to get the players in the middle thinking, while they are working on possession how they are going to get into position to make a penetrating pass or run to get to goal.

The first team to 5 goals wins.
