3x5 Small-Sided Game

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Todays featured activity works on passing, receiving, communication and much more.

Start with a 40 x 40 grid with three groups of fives. One group (in this case the black group) starts with balls, one other group is on offense and the third group is on defense.

Any of the players can go anywhere in the grid.

The black team is passing to the yellow team and the yellow team must one touch the ball back to the black team. The blue team is trying to prevent the pass.

The defending players can switch players with their teammates or stay with the same player the entire time.

Do this for 2 minutes and then the black team becomes the offensive team, the yellow team becomes the defending team and the blue team becomes the serving team. After two minutes rotate again.

Next do the same thing but this time, the player receiving the ball must control the ball and play it to a different server. Using the example above, the black players pass the ball to the yellow players and then the yellow player must find a different black player to pass back to.

Each group gets the opportunity to play each of the three roles for 2 minute periods.

One key to this activity is the group that is serving must keep moving the entire time they have the ball. Frequently this type of activity has the servers in a stationary position which makes it much easier but in this activity, there should be constant movement by all involved.

Have a great day!
